Article: Why is Origen so special?

¿Por qué Origen es tan especial?

Why is Origen so special?

For centuries, Merino wool was one of the Iberian Peninsula's greatest treasures. Known as white gold , it sustained economies, built roads, and made Spain a textile powerhouse across Europe. Exporting this breed of sheep was prohibited: its genetics, knowledge, and fiber were protected.

Today, that value has almost been lost. And that is precisely where Vuelta al Origen (Return to the Origin) comes in: a project that doesn't look to the past with nostalgia, but with discernment.

When wool was wealth (and why it was)

Merino wool was valuable because it combined qualities that were difficult to find together:

  • Fineness : very thin fibers, soft to the touch

  • Elasticity and resilience : the thread stretches and returns

  • Durability : garments that lasted for years

  • Thermal capacity : provides warmth and regulates humidity

These traits were not accidental. They were the result of centuries of herd selection and a breeding method designed for wool, not just meat.

Back to the Origin: raising wool again as a valuable commodity

Vuelta al Origen was born with a clear idea: to return to raising wool as it was when it was gold, but with today's technical knowledge. To achieve this, Juan and Jesús have worked directly with the flock, seeking to unite two worlds:

  • The fineness, whiteness and density of Australian merino wool , today a global benchmark (80% of the world's merino wool comes from Australia).

  • And the unique qualities of the Spanish merino : resilience, resistance, elasticity and memory.

The result is a balanced fiber: very fine, yet vibrant . Soft, yet strong. Pleasant to the touch, yet functional in the garment.

EUROPE'S superfine wool!

When we talk about fineness, we're talking about microns, the diameter of the fiber.

The fewer microns a wool has:

  • It feels softer on the skin

  • The more flexible the fabric

  • and its management must be more delicate.

Vuelta al Origen works with a superfine micron thickness , one of the finest developed in Europe, without losing the structural qualities that make a garment usable and long-lasting.

That balance is the key to the project: not just seeking softness, but wool with the best qualities.

The flock as a starting point

The quality of this wool is not corrected during spinning. It is decided in the field.

Animal selection, feeding, herd management, and annual shearing determine the length and uniformity of the fiber. That's why the project improves every year: the herd learns, refines its behavior, and responds accordingly.

During the last shearing, the fleeces clearly showed this evolution: more uniform, longer, and whiter. Signs that the work is going in the right direction.

Back to the Origin is not just a new wool product. It is the recovery of a way of understanding fiber as heritage, as a resource, and as the future.

When wool regains its value:

  • the flock matters

  • the territory is taken care of

  • the trade remains

  • and the final product lasts

That's what white gold meant. And that's what we're rebuilding today, micron by micron, centimeter by centimeter.

We are very proud of this recommendation that we are going to make to you below;
