THE PROCESS
All the wool used in Wooldreamers collections comes from sheep raised locally, as close to home as possible. Each collection has complete traceability, from the sheep to your hands.
Because we handle every step of the process, from shearing to final spinning, we can guarantee the exact origin of our collections. This is unique and something few brands can achieve, since the journey from sheep to yarn involves several intermediate processes where the wool's traceability can be lost.
Indeed, from the shearing done on the farms to the final spinning. Once our team of shearers brings the wool to our washing facility in Mota del Cuervo (Cuenca), we carry out all the subsequent processing here.
Being able to carry out the entire process in one place avoids many carbon emissions, which, together with the use of renewable energies such as solar and biomass, allows us to produce one of the yarns with the lowest carbon footprint on the market .
Although WoolDreamers is a young project, we are the fourth generation of our family spinning business. We have been working with wool for over 100 years!
The flocks are selected only after we have verified that they meet the quality and animal welfare standards upon which the Wooldreamers project was founded. We always focus on flocks that are linked to extensive or transhumant practices and that are as close as possible to our facilities. Through this research, we know that our project will have a positive impact on the ecosystem and the community where these sheep live.
Yes, absolutely. This practice isn't carried out in Spain, but in any case, we verify it continuously thanks to our ongoing audits of the farms we work with.
No, quite the opposite. It's scientifically proven that sheep experience a reduction in stress levels after shearing. While it's true that sheep tend to get nervous during shearing, as they are quite timid animals, thanks to methods like Tally Hi* used by our shearers, this nervousness translates into comfort.
This method involves resting the sheep on the shearer's knees without any restraints. The sheep, almost magically, rests peacefully, and the shearer calmly performs his work. It's a sight to behold.
We're doing our part in this shift towards a more circular and sustainable economy. By eliminating many intermediaries, we can pass these benefits on to the shepherds.
All the flocks that work with us receive compensation for their wool that is far above market value (in many cases, three times higher). They go from incurring losses to earning a profit that allows them to continue in this profession. The result is shepherds who choose to continue investing in wool and animal husbandry.
Our Yarns
There are many differences between the various collections. The type of wool, its origin, the type of yarn, the twist, the doubling, the number of plies, etc. Each collection has its own characteristics. Furthermore, each one has a story behind it that makes it even more authentic and exclusive.
Thanks to our OEKOTEX Standard 100 & GOTS certifications, we can demonstrate that our wool does not undergo any toxic treatments during cleaning or yarn production. This process preserves the natural qualities and properties of the wool.
Furthermore, the production process is carried out with the help of sustainable and renewable energies such as biomass and solar energy.
No, we don't use this process because it's highly polluting. It also destroys the natural state of the fiber.
With the superwash method, also called Chlorine-Hercosett, the scales on the wool fibers are first destroyed with chloric acid and then coated with Hercosett resin. This is why these wools feel like plastic to the touch.
We are accustomed to commercial wool undergoing a process called carbonization. During this process, the wool is passed through a sulfuric acid bath along with other chemicals to clean it and completely remove any plant material. This process can damage the wool fiber and is highly polluting. We do not use this process as it goes against our ecological principles.
In our case, we use several processes to remove as much of this type of residue as possible, leaving only a minimal amount, which is what you see in the final yarn. These plant fragments will usually come off as you knit the skein or ball. If they don't, we recommend using tweezers to carefully remove them.
We try to make the photos as true as possible to the color of the yarn, but due to the taking and editing of the photographs and the different resolutions of the screens from which the viewing is made (computers and mobiles) the actual color of the wool may differ.
The number of meters is approximate. Natural fibers like wool behave naturally and, in many cases, depending on various factors such as humidity or temperature, can have more or less elasticity.
The yarn characteristics, samples, and needles to use are suggestions and recommendations we provide. However, we understand that everyone works with yarn differently and has their own preferences.
Yes, that's right. When we started this project, this was also one of our main principles: that our collections be inclusive and help these people in some way. That's why we wanted to include them and give them a role in this wonderful process. They are the ones who label and braid our skeins. These people belong to the El Castellar Occupational Center in Mota del Cuervo and the Asprona Occupational Center in Villarrobledo.
