family and occupation

our story

The history of Wooldreamers is not understood as a succession of dates, but as the continuity of a trade in a specific place.

Over time, the relationship with wool has changed, transformed, and been resumed, shaping the project as it exists today.

1923

The origin of the trade

The first reference to working with wool in the family dates back to 1923, when Julián, along with an uncle of his, worked in a wool blanket workshop.

All of his children helped in the workshop and two of them, Ramón and Teodoro, decided to continue with the trade.

At that time, wool was collected in carts and taken to be washed in natural areas such as the Saona River, near Mota del Cuervo. Wool was an integral part of daily life and the landscape.

1965

Adapt or disappear

The arrival of the tractor and agricultural machinery profoundly changed the rural world.

The blanket factory, whose main customers were farmers and shepherds, stopped selling enough to support the family.

Ramón and Teodoro packed their bags and went to Madrid in search of work, but after a few months they decided to return. They continued working with wool, this time focusing on yarn, adapting to a context that was no longer the same.

1978

Build the washhouse

After marrying two sisters, Ramón and Teodoro decided to take another step.

On a plot of land on the outskirts of his in-laws' village, they built their own wool washing facility, consolidating an infrastructure that allowed them to continue processing wool in the same place.

The washing facility became a key element in keeping the entire process alive in the territory.

2000

Sustaining the legacy

The loss of Teodoro marked a turning point.

His children and those of Ramón, Leopoldo, Jesús, Eva and Ramón Jr., decided to bet on the family legacy at a particularly difficult time.

The rise of synthetic fibers and the devaluation of wool meant that what had sustained several families for decades was becoming an increasingly fragile activity.

2018

wool as waste

The price of wool reached worrying levels.

What had been a treasure for Julián, to the point of needing a state credential to be able to collect it, came to be considered worthless waste.

This change highlighted the complete break between wool, the territory, and the system that had sustained it for generations.

2021

WOOLDREAMERS

In 2021, faced with the gradual disappearance of the wool industry and the total loss of value of wool, Ramón decided to take a step forward. Not as an automatic continuation of the past, but as a conscious response to a system that had severed the connection between wool, the land, and the people who worked with it.

Wooldreamers was founded with a clear mission: to work exclusively with flocks where the wool has real value and is not treated as waste. Contrary to the logic of cutting costs and putting pressure on suppliers, the project prioritizes fair compensation, direct relationships, and keeping the entire process in the same location.

Wooldreamers does not intend to recover wool as it once was, but to work with it as it can and should be done today, restoring dignity to the material, the craft and the chain that sustains it.

2022

Knitter World

It was a real eye-opener to see so many people knitting and approaching wool from a conscious perspective. From the very beginning, the support of the knitting community was unwavering, demonstrating a genuine curiosity about the origin of the materials and the work behind each strand.

That interest and that way of looking at things helped to reinforce the idea that the craft still has meaning when it is shared and understood.

2024

wool4life

Wool4life was born as a complementary space from which to explore the possibilities of local wool through experimentation, design and contemporary creation.

A project with which we want to showcase the technical, cultural and expressive virtues of wool, bringing into dialogue craft, material and new ways of working with it.
