Ripollesa

Catalonia

Origin & Habitat

Its origins trace back to an ancient cross between the sheep that populated the central Pyrenees and Merino sheep brought over through transhumance. Its name refers to its original location in the Ripollès region. It plays an essential role in maintaining the rural environment in extensive grazing systems. It was also a sheep breed historically used for transhumance between the valleys (winter) and the mountains (summer), a practice still observed by some flocks today. Currently, it is classified as an endangered native breed.

Wool

These sheep with black or brown spots on their face and limbs offer us a fleece of medium-fine white wool with a fineness ranging from 24-26 microns.
